FOXHUNTING IS BACK
WESTLAKES INAUGURAL FOXHUNT
Hi all, on Sunday the 11 th of September the club ran the first of what we hope will be many fox
hunts. Five competitive vehicles started with all manner of antenna systems, from fully rotating
yagi arrays to people with handhelds.
The day broke with what could only be described as questionable weather which had some
people worried that they might get wet, but as has become custom in these things it cleared up
to a lovely sunny day so no one could whinge about that.
At 10 o'clock Geoff VK2EO fired up the fox and waited patiently to see who would turn up
and when. All the contestants seemed to head in the same direction but all of a sudden they all
went their own ways, that's when it became interesting. A lot of the fox hunters were
coordinating on 70cms, but only to see if anyone could hear the fox at all.
The fox was carefully positioned so that in fact no one at the club could hear it. Peter
VK2YGM thought he could and headed north west, so as he was the only one that seemed to
have some copy all others agreed that was the direction to go, five minutes later cars going all
directions to see what they could find.
I personally went to Barnsley then Toronto before heading north again and it wasn't till I got to
Lake Road that I was able to hear the fox. From all reports operators were hearing it all over
Wallsend, Shortland, Elemorevale and Rankin Park.
Without going into too many details it took exactly one hour for the first team of Steve
VK2UD/Karen VK2ZKG to find the fox, five minutes later MattVK2ZMT/Linda then Goo
VK2UMG/Kelly and last was Peter VK2YPW/Cathy. There was one DNF (did not finish)
which was the team everyone expected to do well, the team of Peter VK2YGM/Irene with
the yagi's and all the gear who found Mt Sugarloaf was still there and that TV channel 5a
works well.
At 11:30 Geoff announced that the fox had been found and we were all going back to the club
for a BBQ lunch. The original idea of having the BBQ at the place where the fox was had to
be abandoned due to a lack of facilities. It is hoped that future fox hunts will have foxes hidden
where toilets are to be found close by.
Back at the club the intrepid hunters were met by hoards of hungry hams and families for the
festivities. A great family get together followed a delicious BBQ meal. Prizes were awarded
and a lot of fun generally made up the rest of the day.
So hope to see you all for the next one, come on give it a go, if I can do it I bet you can too.
